Some of the maintenance needs of these types of vehicles are the same as the cars our parents drove, but there are other types of service you need to consider that might not be necessary for traditional gas-powered vehicles—and some you can ignore completely. What Services Do Hybrid Vehicles Need?
For the most part, you can treat a lot of hybrids just like a conventional gasoline vehicle when it comes to proper service and maintenance, though there are a few key things to keep in mind. For starters, remember that a hybrid still has a conventional gas-powered engine that requires the same maintenance as any other: this includes things like oil and filter changes, eventual spark plug changes, and more. Although you still need to have your brakes inspected and eventually replaced, they will wear much slower if you have a hybrid that uses regenerative braking since this goes easier on your brake pads. Finally, keep in mind that the battery and electric motor used by a hybrid vehicle also need to be checked regularly and properly maintained; for example, some high-voltage batteries are air-cooled with a filter that needs to be replaced to keep running well.
What Services Do Electric Vehicles Need?
Electric vehicles can be incredibly fun to drive, and we love leaving the gas pump behind for good. You still need to properly service and maintain these vehicles, though their service needs can be quite different from traditional cars. For starters, there is no engine, so you do not have to worry about things like routine oil changes. The brakes will still wear out over time, but regenerative braking used by EVs means they will wear out much slower; they should still be checked regularly to be safe, but expect them to last a long time. Your EV has a cooling system for the batteries and motors; it is important to have this system checked regularly and serviced or recharged as needed to keep your vehicle cool.
We should note that there are a number of systems that you still need to keep in mind and worry about when it comes to proper maintenance. Your tires will still wear out over time as you drive; in fact, EVs are more powerful than many other vehicles and can wear out tires more quickly. Be sure to check the tread depth and pressure of your tires on a regular basis, so you know when they need to be replaced. You will also need to replace your windshield wipers, washer fluid, and similar items found on EVs, much the same as traditional cars.
